Literacy

Reading
Thursday, November 9th, 2017

In reading, the students have begun their Reading Letters to me about a book they have read. Their letters are due on the 15th and 30th of each month. I will read their letters and give them feedback after each submission.

We have also been working on summarizing texts. The students have been introduced to the strategy of creating a GIST list to help narrow down the key ideas. They have also be introduced to another strategy called, "Somebody Wanted But So" and will use a graphic organizer to help them with this strategy.

Writing
Thursday, November 9th, 2017

We have begun to look at narrative writing. We will look at the characteristics that make up a narrative, how it is organized, and how to use descriptive language to grab the readers' attention and make the stories more interesting.

Word Study
Thursday, November 9th, 2017

Students have explored nouns, verbs, and adjectives as a way to edit their work and make their writing more effective to the reader.

As we write narratives, we will examine the use of adverbs as well and figurative language (similes, alliteration, etc.).

Mathematics

Number Sense and Numeration
Thursday, November 9th, 2017

So far, we have looked at place value of whole numbers up to 10 000. The students have learned how to write numbers in:
Word Form - 26 581
(Twenty-six thousand five hundred eighty-one)
AND
Expanded Form
(The value of each digit - 20 000 + 6 000 + 500 + 80 + 1).

They have also learned how to round numbers. A quick little rhyme I have taught them to help understand how to round goes like this...

Locate the number,
Look RIGHT next door.
5 or higher, add one more.
4 or lower, just ignore.

We have also begun to look at decimal numbers to decimal hundredths.
